Dealing with Anxiety – The Solution Is Within You
How to deal with anxiety is a question that has been handed down like a tradition for a few generations now. Anxiety has been the bane of human beings from ages. However, it was not until much later that people started to understand and diagnose it as a problem to be treated. The solace that we have today is that it can be treated and cured. The panic and fear that trails along with you needn’t be your constant companion any longer. The choice of course as with most things in life is ours. Either we decide to cower in fear or hide behind the facade of “all is well” or we get ready to take stock and meet it head on.
So let us understand the basics. As they say, build from the ground to make it stronger. Let us get down to the brass tacks. Get our foundation right.
What is Anxiety and Anxiety Disorder?
We shouldn’t get overly concerned if we feel anxiety, It is a physiological reaction to some unidentified or identified stressor. It is a normal reaction that helps a person to deal with the situation causing the anxiety. However, if it has become an emotion in excess or starts controlling your life, it becomes an anxiety disorder. First it is necessary to distinguish and identify which is the condition that has affected you.
What are the symptoms?
The physical symptoms can include any of the below. No person would ever experience all of it. Please note that this is an informative list and not exhaustive.
- * Heart Palpitations * Fatigue * Nausea * shortness of breath * muscle weakness * headaches * external symptoms like sweating, pallor etc * agitation * blurred vision * chest pains * Panic attacks * Neck and overall tension * pupil dilation etc
The emotional symptoms include:(again the list is not exhaustive)

Now let us understand what its causes could be.
Latest study in psychology show that increased anxiety is caused by some stimuli or threats in the environment that makes us increasingly vigilant to protect ourselves from them and also take proactive steps. Due to this, it has been noted that the more anxious set of people are less likely to die from accidents as they are mostly over vigilant.

Now that we know the What and Why of Anxiety, let us see what are those methods, anxiety treatments, tips that can help people fight and win this battle against Anxiety.
Treatments and Remedies
Anxiety, as we have seen is an unbalanced and extreme reaction to a situation. So as stated in the title, we can control it. All that we need is the willpower to try and steel in our veins to help us be strong and not give up. Please keep in mind that it is a long haul uphill and there are no shortcuts to reaching that goal. Remember
Try some of the below, consciously:
- Start by trying to take stock of what the real issue is. Everyone really knows. Sometimes our sub conscious doesn’t let our mind comprehend these. So dig deep.
- Bring a perspective to these – Analyse and see if it really important, if it find solutions. If it is not let it go. But if that doesn’t work let it go for today and decide to worry about it another day. You can even keep notes. (It might sound ridiculous but it helps)
- Now chart out an action plan and stick to it.
- Be mindful of what you are thinking – Don’t let negative thoughts start to creep in. Surround yourself with people who are positive and it will give you that extra energy to fight those negative creepers
- Don’t let “What will people think” bother you too much
- Manage your anger – counting till ten actually helps. Better still try to be forgiving of small issues, it will bring you more peace
- Control negative emotions like jealousy taking over your life – remember what you have is special and many people would covet it. So be happy and contend with what you have. It doesn’t mean you shouldn’t be ambitious, it just means that your ambition must not ride on negative thoughts
- Set do-able targets and manage your time well
- Exercise Discrimination and don’t listen to all advisers and try to absorb it all – Listen to the ideas, ultimately every decision is yours and do so with a clear mind
- Have a fulfilling leisure time enjoyment – Take time off work or your daily routine to relax and do want you want to, wherever you want to
- Pay more attention to others – It will take your mind off you, which in turn will reduce your worry and hence your anxiety
- Yoga and meditation are great ways to calm your mind and feel that positive energy flow within you. They have a number of breathing exercises and asanas (poses) that help you relieve your stress.
- A new concept is anxiety coaches, they claim to be teaching from personal experiences and guide and coach you back to a healthy you.
However, if none of these tips or remedies seem to be helping you, please consult a medical practitioner who can nurse you back to health.
So, people don’t lose heart. There are many with anxiety disorder in this current age. And what is heartening is that a lot many of them have fought it successfully rather than succumb to it. All you need is You, your grit and your determination and of course that smile.
Stay Happy! Keep Smiling!
